New Jersey Bill Permits Atlantic City Casinos to Employ Recruits with Drug Charges

Thursday September 27 will see the New Jersey State Senate vote on a bill that would allow ex-drug convicts to be employed by Atlantic City casinos. The current law impedes drug offenders from holding jobs requiring an employee license; a necessary requisite to work in the industry.

The bill in question would permit people to apply for a license once they can prove they have completed a drug program in New Jersey.

Drug courts allow those convicted of drug charges to enter a treatment program as well as judicial supervision. The norm is that only petty offenders are assigned to New Jersey’s drug courts, which are soon becoming known as “recovery courts”.

Workers in New Jersey are highly in demand as two new casino resorts will open this year creating thousands of new jobs. This comes after the Atlantic City closed 12 casinos between 2014 and 2016, which left 10,000 workers jobless. Many of them had no option but to leave New Jersey and move to Pennsylvania and work for competing casino markets.

The inspiration for the bill came after a conversation Senator Chris Brown had with property developer Joe Jingoli, one of the partners of the New Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. Jingoli is a firm advocate for a change in the industry, due to acknowledgement of an addiction problem many families face in Atlantic county.

The Stars Group Has Sights on Growth and Revenue Diversification

Despite the fact that a while back The Stars Group was deep in debt with little chance of recovering, when completely uprooted by an insider trading scandal involving its CEO and founder David Baazov, it has now paid its debts after acquiring the Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker brands in 2014 for nearly $5 billion. It is also safe to say that David Baazov is out of the picture.

The Canadian gambling organisation has proved that it is time for it to take some serious risks and grow exponentially on a geographical scale.

After being shamefully expelled from the U.S. in April 2011 – following the Black Friday of online poker- the Stars group plans its return to the U.S. determined to leave the scandals that damaged its repute behind.

The Stars group showed its interest in acquiring 80% of Australia’s CrownBet and thus participated in funding the William Hill Australia transaction. It paid a total of $315 million and issued common shares for its recently purchased Australian business, thus becoming Australia’s third largest betting organisation following Tabcorp and Paddy Power’s local brand, Sportsbet.

The Group has also set its sights on the UK Online gambling operator Sky Betting and Gaming for a total amount of $4.7 billion. However, while the negotiation became official in mid-July, the UK Competition and Markets Authority watchdog opened an investigation into the deal the very following day, with a report on the situation to be released this coming October.
